NMR spectroscopy (Bruker NMR 200 and 400 MHz)

In Autumn 2011, the Lehrstuhl für Bodenkunde offered two research grants to early career scientists who will apply the NanoSIMS and/or the NMR spectrometer offside the beaten tracks in soil science. The successful candidates can use these state-of-the-art instruments for up to 3 month and the grant will additionally cover housing and travel expenses.

Prof. Ingrid Kögel-Knabner now selected Dr. Chao Liang from the University of Wisconsin - Madison as the winner of the grant. He will predominately use the solid state 13C NMR spectroscopy for “Linking Microbiology and Carbon Geochemistry in the Arctic ecosystem”.

Dr. Chao Liang is currently a research associate at the DOE-Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His research focuses on the response of microbial community composition and function to climate change and anthropogenic disturbances, and tries to address how microorganisms control ecosystem functioning (sustainability).
Dr. Liang obtained his Ph.D (Soil Science) in University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008; he obtained his Master’s degree (Ecology Science) at the Institute of Applied Ecology of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003; and he obtained his Bachelor’s degree (Environmental Science) at Shenyang Agricultural University in 2000.
