Green City of the Future – climate change-resilient neighbourhoods in a growing city

Climate change and population growth present the city of Munich with special challenges. Local extreme weather events lead to increased intensity and frequency of heat stress and floodings, at the same time the population is growing rapidly. The aim of the project “Grüne Stadt der Zukunft” is to develop integrated solutions to meet the challenges of climate change and subsequent densification in Munich and to test how these can be implemented in urban planning.

The focus is on selected districts of Munich, which face the conflicting goals of green spaces and housing needs. In these living labs, an interdisciplinary research team of five working groups investigates how climate adaptation requirements can be anchored at various planning levels and processes. In this context, the microclimatic impacts of green infrastructure measures are modeled and socio-economic analyzes carried out to design urban green spaces with different groups of actors.

Research questions

  • Which factors and instruments are used for the implementation of planning processes for green infrastructure?
  • Which regulatory functions does green infrastructure provide for climate adaption and climate protection?
  • How can area requirements for green infrastructure and the demand for residential space be integrated from the perspective of different stakeholders?
  • Which obstacles could affect the implementation of green infrastructure measures and how could these obstacles be reduced?
