Since 2000 a small working groups investigates peatlands and other wetlands in southern Africa. The focus is not only on the description of the wetland vegetation, vegetation types and their ecology and distribution, but also in the investigations related to their sustainable management. Numerous intensive and efficient contacts to, and partnerships with southern African universities, research institutes and other organizations have been established.

Thematic group: Wetland research in Okavango Delta, Botswana
Since October 2000, an intensive cooperation started with the Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research Centre in Maun, Botswana and the University of Pretoria for research on vegetation of the Okavango Delta. The main focus is on vegetation dynamics related to flooding and fire-regimes.
