I am interested in forest ecology, in particular the response of forests to changing climate and environment. During my master thesis, I studied in cooperation with the LWF Freising oak mortality in Lower Franconia, being predominantly induced by backwater-induced hypoxia. Information derived from soil conditions, crown defoliation and remote sensing data were used to test the relation between hypoxia and mortality statistically. In my PhD thesis, I studied in cooperation with the Natural Resources Institute Luke (previous Metla) climate-induced growth response and regeneration success of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H.Karst) in the tree-line ecotone of Finish Lapland. This was done by a multi-methodological approach in order to detect growth responses and tree-line relocations on varying temporal and spatial scales: Growth and regeneration were examined by plot-based field monitoring and dendroecological sampling, while vegetation indices derived from satellite-based datasets indicated changes in tree-line position and vegetation density. Based on the research results, I am highly interested in external disturbance regimes as regulating factors for successful regeneration in tree-line locations, or for increasing mortality rate masking the benefits of climate warming.
